Doctors condemn TV channel anchor
‘Neeya Naana show defames healthcare’
Coimbatore:The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors’ Association (TNGDA) has taken exception to Gopinath, anchor on Vijay TV’s show, Neeya Naana, for portraying the comprehensive medical health check-up conducted by hospitals as a sham and an attempt by doctors to mint money.
Stating that the TV presenter was using the television medium to mislead people, the president of the TNGDA, Coimbatore district, Dr N Ravi Shankar, said that while on one side the doctors had been impressing upon the need for a medical check up to catch diseases at an early stage and initiating efforts to create awareness about this, to then project a general screening as a waste of money was unacceptable, he said.
Innumerable cases can be cited where silent diseases, even cancer, in some cases have been diagnosed and treated only because of periodic and timely medical screening. “A periodic health check up is the most important concept of preventive measure by various health organisations, and to call this a money-making venture would be irresponsible on the part of the anchor and the channel that had telecast the show. There is enough scientific evidence to prove that a comprehensive check up after the age of 30 years is required to diagnose issues that are asymptomatic,” he added.
Government doctors across the state have condemned the show. “While there were some mindless people rattling on about how doctors were making money out of the screenings and how it was ‘unnecessary’ there was no one from the medical fraternity to counter the argument. The show had also accused doctors of listing out a series of tests for patients with no actual purpose other than making money,” one doctor lamented.
