Bihar Assembly bypolls ‘semi-final’ records 47% voter turnout

Over 26.42 lakh eligible voters had the chance to decide the fate of total 94 candidates
Patna: A meagre 47 per cent voter turnout in the bypolls for ten Assembly seats in Bihar on Thursday, touted as the crucial ‘semi-finals’ for next year’s state polls, caused worry among the two ambitious coalitions, though each side waxed confident of winning all the seats.
The bypolls, widely expected to offer a tentative picture of the mandate in Bihar’s Assembly polls due in October, 2015, in view of the new political polarisation in the state in the wake of the LS polls, were held peacefully amid tight security arrangements.
The ‘maha-gathvandhan’ (grand coalition) of the ruling JD(U), RJD and Congress was pitted against a resurgent NDA that has BJP, LJP and RLSP in Bihar.
Over 26.42 lakh eligible voters had the chance to decide the fate of total 94 candidates vying for the 10 seats. Narkatiaganj registered the largest turnout of 58 per cent and Bhagalpur the lowest at 37 per cent, the EC said.
Turnout was 42% at Rajnagar, Jale 44%, Chapra 47.4%, Hajipur 46%, Mohiuddinnagar 57%, Parbatta 45%, Banka 45%, and Mohania 48.2%.
