Woman injured in CISF firing mishap

The trainee cops were conducting firing practice at the firing range

Hyderabad: A woman was injured by a bullet in a case of misfire at the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) centre at New Umnapur village of Pulkul mandal in Medak district on Thursday. The bullet hit her head while she was working in the fields.

The trainee cops were conducting firing practice at the firing range, when one of the rounds missed the target and hit Chandrakala, 48. She sustained a superficial injury and was shifted to hospital. Her condition is said to be stable. The victim, Chandrakala, 48, is a farmer.

Police said the incident occurred at around 9.30 am when the trainees were practising at the CISF centre's firing range. While shooting one of the rounds fired by a trainee missed the target and injured Chandrakala who was working in her cotton field. Locals rushed to her rescue and took her to hospital.

“The bullet travelled about two km and hit her head. She was immediately rushed to Gokul Hospital in Sangareddy where the bullet was removed. Later she was shifted to Yashoda Hospital in Hyderabad,” said CI V. Raghu, of Jogipet. She was kept under observation for a day.

Officials said safety measures were taken by CISF officials. A case was booked for negligence. Collector A. Sharath ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. CISF officials have taken safety measures at the firing range, but it was an accident, said Mr Raghu. Meanwhile, the relatives of Chandrakala who rushed to Yashoda Hospital sought action against those responsible. They demanded an ex-gratia from the government for the victim.
