Four workers die in Chennai factory fire

Around 30 workers, including 10 women, are working as daily wage labourers
Chennai: Tragedy struck four workers while they were asleep in a plastic scrap godown at Veeraraghavapuram on Poonamalee-Avadi main road. They were charred to death when a fire broke out in the premises on Wednesday night. Two of deceased were from Odisha while the other two were from Tiruchendur and Kancheepuram, police said.
Around 30 workers, including ten women, are working as daily wage laborers in the 7200-sq.ft warehouse of ‘Rajakani traders’ which also houses a plastic waste-recycling unit. Five of the workers were provided accommodation inside the godown in a n 80 square foot makeshift room, police investigations revealed.
On Wednesday, around midnight fire had broken out amidst the plastic scrap and had engulfed the whole godown quickly leaving the four occupants of the room no escape route.
Police personnel on night patrol had noticed the fire emanating from the godown and informed the Fire and rescue personnel. Another worker, Chittiraivel, 32 of Tiruchendur who was staying in a room near the gate of the godown escaped with the help of the police.
As many as 15 fire tenders from the nearby Poonamalee, Avadi, Red Hill and Manali rushed to the spot and put out the fire after an ordeal that lasted more than three hours.
