Crime against women: Bengaluru shamed as four rapes reported in a day

Bengaluru has been witnessing rapes and robbery with alarming regularity

Bengaluru: Despite all the hue and cry over putting an end to the rising number of crimes against women in the state, they continue to take place unabated.
A 22-year-old footpath vendor of clothes, a native of Bihar, was repeatedly gang-raped by three men in a farmhouse in Tippegondanahalli on Wednesday night under Taverekere police limits. The victim, who managed to escape early Thursday, ran semi-nude on to the road looking for help from oncoming vehicles. A cab driver picked her up, brought her to the police station where she was provided clothes and a complaint was registered.

According to the police, two men identified as Arun Gowda, 24, and Kempa, 36, had picked up the victim in their car from Majestic around 8 p.m., under the pretext of dropping her at her house in Vijayanagar. They reached a farmhouse in Tippegondanahalli around 9:30 p.m. There, along with the caretaker of the farmhouse, Mahadeva, all three accused individually took turns to rape her, said the police. As per the victim’s complaint, all the three accused were in an inebriated state while committing the crime, added the police.

The victim managed to escape from the farmhouse in the early hours as the two accused, who brought her to the spot, had left and Mahadeva was in a state of drunken stupor. The woman took a chance and ran outside the house leaving her clothes behind. “At about 3.30 a.m. on Thursday, the victim managed to escape while semi-nude and ran on to the road seeking help from the vehicles that came by,” said Anupam Agarwal, Superintendent of Police, Ramnagara.

The victim narrated her ordeal to the police. The police immediately registered a complaint and took her to the scene of the crime and found Mahadeva in the farmhouse. He was immediately arrested while Arun Gowda and Kempa were nabbed later and the cab driver was made witness in the case.

Meanwhile, A 13-year-old mentally challenged girl has been allegedly raped by her own father and a complaint was lodged by the victim’s mother at Srirampura police station on Thursday. According to the police, the victim was raped by her father about three or four months ago and he is absconding ever since.

On the day of the incident, the grandmother of the victim had seen Shanmugam raping the girl through a window at their house in Srirampura when his wife was not at home, said the police.
“The victim is not in a position to talk or give a statement about what happened to her as she is mentally challenged. However, we have sent her for a medical examination which will give us some information about the assault. We have taken up the complaint and the accused has been booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) act as well,” said T.R. Suresh DCP North Division.

A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her own paternal uncle in R T Nagar. Though the incident occurred on Saturday night, it came to light only on Thursday after the girl’s grandmother filed a complaint. Police said the victim was staying with her accused, identified as Amjad (32), a carpenter, and his family for the last four years after her parents died. According to the police, Amjad had sent his wife and children to relative’s house in Rajagopalanagar and the girl was alone at home when the incident took place.

A 27-year-old woman has filed a petition with the Deputy Commissioner of Police North East that she was raped and cheated by a first-division clerk named Ravi Kumar (42), who works in Upparpet DCP’s office. According to the victim, Ravi Kumar had duped her and promised to marry her. He even took her to Shimoga and had physical relationship with her. She claimed in her complaint that she was now three months pregnant.
