Congress not LoP in Lok Sabha, says Speaker Sumitra Mahajan
The 16th Lok Sabha would function without a Leader of Opposition
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday received yet another setback when Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan rejected the demand by the party to recognize it as the principal Opposition party in the House and accord the status of Leader of Opposition to its leader. The 16th Lok Sabha would function without a Leader of Opposition, for the first time in three decades.
The last time when the Lok Sabha did not have a Leader of Opposition was in 1984 when the Congress returned to power with an absolute majority and the Telugu Desam the second largest party with 35 seats. Ms Mahajan, in a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, conveyed her decision not to accept the party’s demand for according LoP status to its leader Malikarjuna Kharge.
