Top cancer centre will come up at Kochi: CM
The first phase of which will be completed spending Rs 450 crore
Kochi: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Monday made it clear that a cancer institute and research centre of international standards will be set up at the Ernakulam Government Medical College campus at Kalamassery and asked the consultancy to complete the work in a time-bound manner.
Laying the foundation stone for the cancer centre at Kalamassery- the first phase of which will be completed spending Rs 450 crore, the Chief Minister said that the centre will give equal thrust on cancer treatment and research. He said that cancer care was a priority before the government.
The Chief Minister also said that a cardiology wing will be started at the EMC soon and steps will be initiated to set up a bus stand at Kalamassery which is becoming a hub of a lot of health, industrial and educational institutions.
“The Kalamassery municipal chairman has requested for it. He said that the municipality is ready to set up the bus stand provided the government gave land. He said that the industries department has adequate land there and the same will be taken up with the Industries Minister and steps will be taken to set up the bus stand,” the Chief Minister said.
Justice V R Krishna Iyer who also spoke on the occasion showered praise on the Chief Minister for meeting the demand of his movement to set up the cancer centre and wished him lasting life. Health Minister V S Sivakumar said that 10,000 cancer patients will benefit in a year from the Kalamassery cancer centre. Ministers K Babu, V K Ibrahim Kunju, Anoop Jacob and MPs and MLAs and managing director of the implementing agency of cancer centre, HSCC, Gyanesh Pande, spoke on the occasion.
