Kochi hospital performs liver- kidney transplant

The operation was the first of its kind in the state
KOCHI: The Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre has successfully performed simultaneous liver-kidney transplant, the first of its kind in the state, according to hospital sources.
A 61-year-old diabetic patient from Muvattupuzha, who suffered from chronic liver disease and kidney failure, underwent the surgery on August 4. The liver and kidney were harvested from a 19-year-old brain-dead patient Ananthakrishnan.
The organs started functioning normally soon after the transplant. The patient was discharged and came for checkup on Monday.
“The patient no more needs dialysis and can lead a normal life within three weeks,” said Dr. Philip Augustine, managing director of Lakeshore Hospital.
During the transplant, a tumour was found in his liver which was treated through an interventional radiology procedure, Trans-arterial Chemo Embolization (TACE). The transplant was led by multi-organ transplant director Dr. Philip G. Thomas.
