Flood toll rises to 48 in Uttar Pradesh, Army put on alert

In Dhemaji more than 70 villages were submerged by the flood waters of Brahmaputra

Lucknow: The death toll from flood-related incidents rose to 48 in Uttar Pradesh on Modnay where thousands of persons have been affected by the crisis triggered by overflowing rivers even as monsoon rainfall declined in the north. The army has been put on alert in Uttar Pradesh on Monday while. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has already been deployed in the flood hit areas.

Hundreds of villages continue to be flooded in Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur and Lakhimpur Kheri districts while the fury of Ghaghra, Rapti and Sharda rivers has been further aggravated after heavy rains in neighboring Nepal. A senior official said that more than 17,000 people have been displaced and are staying in relief camps.

Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan said that 73 relief camps have been set up and food packets are being provided to all those affected by the floods. The state government has also released Rs 51 crore for relief works. It has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh each to those who have died in the floods.
In Assam, The flood situation remains critical in a number of districts including Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Sonitpur.

In Lakhimpur, two people died in flood related incidents and over 100 villages were under flood water. In Dhemaji more than 70 villages were submerged by the flood waters of the Brahmaputra. Four relief camps were opened by the district administration.
