Achint Kaur back on the screen
Mumbai: After a long hiatus Achint Kaur is back on telly this time, as a saasuma. She plays Ravi Dubey’s to be mother in law on Jamai Raja. Having been on a long break, she admits that things have changed. For one, daily soaps have become the norm, thereby compromising on the content.
“As an actor it is disheartening when content suffers. It irks you at times but you can’t help it because you don’t have the luxury of time. Another change is that the sets have shifted to far off locations; studios are no longer in the city. My phone actually goes on roaming when I’m on the sets,” she tells us.
Talking about her onscreen daughter Nia Sharma, Achint says, “I saw her during the auditions and remember telling the team that she would look convincing as my daughter.” Having grown up in smaller towns before making it to TV in Mumbai, Achint says she can relate to the TV content that some city slickers may find conservative.
“I’ve grown up in a small town and the things you see in daily soaps are reality there, which is why the audience from small towns relate to soaps more. I was in Meerut in Class 3 when a male Muslim neighbour married a Punjabi woman. The news soon spread across town and created a riot like situation. The reaction may seem extreme to city people, but it does happen and this is what serials cater to.”
Talking about the beginning of her journey into the world of acting, Achint tells us, “I was married with a two year old child when I made my debut. We were in Nagaland and my husband had just got posted to Mumbai at that time. Someone just offered me a show and I took it up as a form of activity. My husband’s side of the family was not too excited about me taking up the show, but of course they have come around now and are supporting me.”
