New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has decided to issue summons to Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali khan as part of its investigations into the alleged violation of the foreign exchange rules by him in 2011. The agency is expected to issue summons to the Sufi singer through diplomatic channels by the end of this month.
The renowned Pakistani singer was detained at the IGI airport by the officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for allegedly carrying $1.24 lakh on February 13, 2011.
The singer, along with his troupe, had landed in Delhi from Karachi and was on his way to Dubai when he was detained. The ED also registered a case against Khan under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) on the basis of DRI’s investigations conducted against him in 2011.
“The ED may impose heavy penalty on him, if the singer fails to give satisfactory reply during examination”, sources said.
The ED recently recorded the statements of three Mumbai-based foreign exchange dealers in connection with the case. Besides, ED sleuths also sought clarifications from the event management firm, who had conducted shows of Khan in connection with the case.
