Teenage biker dies on birthday

Mishap caused by poor road upkeep and insensitive placement of police barricades
Chennai: A teenage rider was killed on his birthday, along with his childhood friend, under the wheels of a sewage tanker in a tragic road mishap caused by poor road upkeep and insensitive placement of barricades by the traffic police near Medavakkam on Saturday.
M. Ashwin, 19, of Nesavalan Nagar in Medavakkam, pursuing a diploma in a private polytechnic college at Selaiyur, was going to the Saibaba temple at Sowmya nagar in Perumbakkam along with his sister’s classmate, Bhakyalakshmi, 17, a class 11 student of the government higher secondary school at East Tambaram.
When the bike was proceeding along the Medavakkam-Mambakkam road, it skidded due to sand on the road and Ashwin lost control of the vehicle. As the bike hit a barricade placed on the road by the traffic police, the youngsters fell on road. A sewage tanker speeding behind, ran over them, killing both on the spot.
The truck driver continued to drive even as the public gave a hot chase. He abandoned the truck after about 600 metres and fled. The teens’ bodies were removed to the hospital.
