Battle of biggies & blockbuster losses

With 4 big-budget films in a span of 30 days, it's a treat for fans
Hyderaabd: From August 29, Tollywood will see the release of four big-budget films in a span of 30 days. While it will be a treat for the fans, one wonders whether this makes good business sense, as the films will definitely eat into each other’s profits.
The NTR Jr and Samantha starrer Rabhasa, which was supposed to release on August 15, has been postponed to August 29 due to the post-production delays. This resulted in Ravi Teja’s Power, which was due for an August 29 release, being pushed back by a week, to September 5.
Meanwhile Aagadu is slated for a September 19 release and Govindudu Andari Vaadele will hit the theatres on October 1.
A Mahesh Babu film always grabs as many screens as possible and even NTR Jr and Ram Charan films see massive releases. With the four films releasing one after the other, a mammoth clash is on the cards, something that does not translate to good business.
“The Telugu film industry is erratic and it’s not a good sign to release all big films over 30 days. This is definitely killing the revenue and it’s going to be a big loss for the exhibitors and distributors. It’s going to be a big revenue loss for everybody,” says Sunil Narang, a leading exhibitor and distributor.
Apart from the four biggies, smaller films like Nee Jathaga Nenundali, which is Sachiin Joshi’s comeback film, Naga Chaitanya’s Oka Laila Kosam, RGV-Manchu Vishnu’s Anukshanam and a few others are slated for release at the same time.
“The plan to release films so that they don’t clash was discussed in the producers’ council a couple of times, but nothing concrete happened,” says Burugupalli Sivaramakrishna, president of Telugu Film Producers Council. He adds that usually the distributors and producers have a talk about a film’s release and a gap of at least two weeks between big films is needed to ensure maximum revenues.
“Yes, we will lose some revenues because of these films releasing within a short period of time,” accepts leading producer, distributor and exhibitor Dil Raju. He, however, says that these situations sometimes can’t be avoided. “Sometimes the shooting gets delayed due to various reasons. Sometimes filmmakers postpone their film’s dates, because everybody wants to cash in on holidays,” he says.
Dil Raju has acquired the distribution rights for Rabhasa and Power for the Nizam area and it should work out well for him as he has his own theatres in the Nizam area. “Generally a two-week gap is good, but if a film is expected to be a hit then we need more time,” he says.
Producers want to release their film as soon as it is ready to avoid financial problems and piracy. In B’wood, producers stick to the dates once they are announced, and accordingly other filmmakers plan their releases. “It’s a big headache for exhibitors when many releases take place. Producers should talk and plan releases for the benefit of everyone,” says Sunil Narang.
At times T’wood does not see any big release, for months, but now four big films are releasing one after the other. It will be interesting to see who will emerge the winner this time.
