Nasscom proposes simulated internship

With AICTE making internship mandatory Nasscom has mooted the concept of simulated internship
Chennai: With the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) making internship mandatory for engineering students and industry not being able to accommodate all students to do internship in their facilities, Nasscom has mooted the concept of simulated internship.
Speaking to DC, Dr Sandhya Chintala, executive director, sector skills council, Nasscom, said companies had always helped students with hands-on training by providing them internship. However, software companies, being apprehensive of data security, restrict the number of interns.
“Keeping this in mind, Nasscom has plans to ask software companies to set up office-like facilities in a college and bring about 10 colleges in a cluster to allow students from these institutions to do their projects under the supervision of company employees,” Dr Chintala said.
According to her, this initiative would be a win-win situation for the students and companies as students get an opportunity to undergo internship and companies, without compromising their security, train students in a simulated environment.
Welcoming the proposal, S. Prabhu, computer science professor at a private engineering college, urged companies not to look at the initial investment to establish the facility but the long-term gains for the firms as well.
“The simulation centre that the company starts can be converted into an academy in course of time to conduct research in various computer-related fields. This will also bridge the gap between institute and industry,” he said.
