Gaiety marks Kovai Independence Day celebrations

Collector honours freedom fighters with shawls
Coimbatore:Cultural events, acrobatics and distribution of welfare aid worth Rs 92.73 lakh marked the Independence Day celebrations in Coimbatore on Friday. Collector Archana Patnaik hoisted the national flag at VOC park grounds and inspected the guard of honour presented by police personnel, Home Guards, NSS and Red Cross volunteers.
The collector also honoured freedom fighters with shawls and distributed welfare aid worth over Rs 92.73 lakh to 248 beneficiaries under various government schemes.
West Zone IG, S. Davidson Devasirvatham, city police commissioner A.K. Vishwanathan, Rural SP M.Sudhakar and corporation commissioner G. Latha were also present.
Around 1,200 students from different schools like CSI girls higher secondary school, Sri Sakthi matriculation higher secondary school, Chandra matriculation higher secondary school, R.S. Puram corporation girls higher secondary school, Annai Satya children’s home, Rasipalayam government higher secondary school and P.S.G.R. Krishnammal girls higher secondary school staged cultural events.
The police maintained tightened security at VOC grounds to ensure peaceful celebrations. Police teams were also deployed at religious institutions, government offices, railway stations, airport, shopping malls and other public places that witnessed heavy crowd.
They also mounted vigil by conducting vehicle checks and intensified patrolling at prominent places.
