Sapphire glass will make the iPhone 6 even more expensive

If Apple puts sapphire glass on its iPhone 6, expect an exorbitant price

With just around a month for the iPhone 6 to be unveiled, speculations rise even higher for the iPhone 6. Apple would be unveiling their next flagship handset(s), the iPhone 6, somewhere between 9 September and 19 September.

Many reports and online videos claimed that the iPhone 6 will sport a sapphire glass as its display protector instead of the conventional Corning Gorilla Glass. Some online reports earlier stated that the factory to produce the sapphire glass is running some troubles, due to which, the iPhone 5.5 will be delayed. However, WSJ claims that if the iPhone 6 does sport a sapphire glass, the device would be far more expensive than the usual expected price.

According to The Wall Street Journal, a sapphire glass costs around $13 for bulk manufacturing as opposed to a regular Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which costs just $3 to produce. This could simply mean an extra cost for the buyer.

WSJ also stated that if the sapphire glass use is true, then there could also be a possibility of limited edition handsets which sport the sapphire glass protection.

Apple is considering the sapphire glass because it is highly resistant to scratches and cracks, as compared to the presently toughest Gorilla Glass variant.

Apple is presently using sapphire glass on the iPhone 5 for the home button, which incorporates the fingerprint scanner and as the camera front glass.
