At Srinagar airport this Independence Day, a giant flag
New Delhi: With nationalism the Modi government's mantra, a new 36X24 feet national flag is set to flutter atop a 105-foot long pole in Srinagar this Independence Day.
The flag has already been transported to Srinagar on the orders of the Civil Aviation ministry and a trial flag-hoisting done. It will be hoisted at the Srinagar airport on Friday. The step has been taken as the existing flag at the airport is apparently “minuscule” and hardly noticeable.
Government sources said the move to hoist the huge flag would boost the “patriotic spirit” in Kashmir. The government is planning a similar move later at other airports in the country, including those in the North-East.
Just on Wednesday, a Union government report had termed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir “stable but fragile”, adding that “the Pakistan--terrorists--separatist nexus continues to undermine the democratic process in the state.”
Prime Minister Modi has visited Jammu and Kashmir twice since assuming office.
