Nilgiris connection with Independence Day

Gandhi’s visit to the hills from January 31 to February 4, 1934 stoked the freedom call
Ooty: While the country is gearing up for Independence Day celebrations on Friday, the Nilgiris Documentation Centre (NDC), based at Kotagiri, recalls memories of pre-Independence era in the hills that also gives an account of the freedom movement in the Nilgiris.
Mr D. Venugopal, honorary director of NDC, said notwithstanding its remoteness and the influence of the British, the Nilgiris played its role in the freedom movement. Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to the hills from January 31 to February 4, 1934 stoked the freedom call.
“The freedom struggle not only touched Badagas, the single largest ethnic community in the Nilgiris, but also equally influenced the small community of Todas on the hills, who composed a song to welcome Gandhi to the hills,” he said.
