Cites inability of DMRC, govt, corp to finish ancillary work

KOCHI: The Kochi Metro Rail Project is all set to get embroiled in the staple diet of competitive politics in the State with CPM Ernakulam district committee deciding to launch a series of agitations against the failure of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, the Cochin Corporation and the State Government in completing the ancillary work before commencing work on the metro project.
CPM district secretary Dinesh Mani said E.Sreedharan, chief consultant of the DMRC had “failed to live up to the expectations of the people. He is interested only in the metro work and has little interest in solving the problems people are facing today all because of the metro work”, he added.
The CPM agitation will commence with a protest from Kanayannur Taluk building to the office of the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd on Saturday, demanding the “freedom to travel”.
Mani also said lack of coordination amongst various agencies connected with the metro project was also adding to people’s woes. “The Cochin Corporation, the State Government, the DMRC and KMRL are the four entities connected with the metro work and these four share no coordination”, he added.
Mani dismissed the comment by Mayor Tony Chammany that the CPM was launching the agitation to divert attention from the controversy over the LDF candidate in the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency. “There is no controversy over the candidate”, he said.
The failure to remove electric poles, clean drainages, renovate footpaths, expand alternate roads such Thammanam-Pulleppady, Goshree-Mamangalm, Bund Road and construction of the Atlantis and Pachalam railway over bridges are some of the major issues being highlighted by the CPM.
