Toxic leak: Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited to remain closed
A high-level committee has been constituted to give a report within three days
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Confirming that the gas that leaked from the Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited at Chavara in Kollam contained toxic substances of small proportion, the government has decided to keep the chemical plant shut.
A high-level committee has been constituted to give a report within three days on the immediate measures to be taken to ensure safety of the plant.
Talking to reporters after a meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Wednesday, Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty said that there were instances of gas leak even on Wednesday and there were toxic particles of small proportion in the emission.
“Though it doesn’t pose any security concerns, we are not ready to take any chances. Hence, it was decided to initiate drastic steps to improve the safety conditions. Till then, the chemical plant will remain shut, whereas the other plants will function,” he said.
Additional chief secretary V. Somasundaran, who is also KMML chairman, will head the high-level committee to prescribe immediate safety measures at KMML. The other members include industry principal secretary P.H. Kurian and ADGP (Intelligence) A. Hemachandran, who is probing into the gas leak.
Meanwhile, no decision was taken on initiating action against KMML officials for the incident. The priority of the government is to ensure that the plant is 100 percent safe. Action against any officials for any lapses would be initiated in due course, the minister said.
