Students’ anti-drug road shows a big hit in Alappuzha
State-wide shows are planned with help of other active groups
ALAPPUZHA: A group of students of Jyothi Nikethan English Medium School, Punnapra here have set up an anti-liquor and anti-drug street play troupe with a view to making people aware of the consequences of liquor and drug consumption. The students, who staged their first play at Alappuzha bus station last month catching the attention of people, have completed half a dozen performances of the play across the district.
Anand S.Lal, a Class X student of the school, the main actor of the drama named “Nerkazhchakal”, says the drama was organised under Skylark, a student’s club at the school”.
“Our motto is “I won’t take liquor, I won’t take drugs. We did a street play performance at Payalkulangara, Ambalapuzha in coordination with the Benjamin Franklin Children’s Club and in Changanachery with the help of Prachodana and Madya Virudha Janakeeya Samarasamithi. Our aim is to promote the anti- narcotic campaign among students and make them aware of the ill effects of drugs and liquor. We are planning to conduct the play across the State with the help of different active anti-liquor groups”, he adds.
S Aleena, an active member of the club, says the idea of the street play was born following a discussion on a Facebook group. After forming the club Skylark, we informed all Facebook friends inviting ideas to spread the anti-liquor and drug message among people. As result of this, the idea of the play came out. We are ready to perform the play for whoever is willing to come forward and conduct our play”, she says.
R Aparna , another student of the school, says they are an active part of the activities because they love the society and friends. “We think it’s our responsibility to spread such an anti-narcotic campaign. We never let ourselves or friends become a curse on the family or society. Hence we will take the street play forward”, she vows. Sen Kallupura, the principal of the school, said that such an initiative deserve appreciation.
“Such events can boost the morale of society in going forward with a strong crusade against alcohol and drugs. The school has initiated several programmes along with academic activities for students to make them socially committed.”, he adds.
