GHMC lets rainwater go waste
Depleted water levels in many parts of Hyderabad and Secunderabad

Hyderabad: Digging of rain water harvesting pits, which would ensure that the water table gets recharged, has been neglected by the civic body.
Due to concretisation, most of the runoff ends up as sewer lines.
The civic body had planned to dig 10,000 RWH pits within its jurisdiction in 2013, and had earmarked Rs 6 crore for them.
“The technical implementation of RWH pits has been poor. The water in the pits does not percolate and remains as slush on the surface,” said Jasveen Jairath of Save Our Lakes.
A few of the RWH pits dug up by the GHMC were at places with no water-flow, or in parks and open spaces, which are of no use.
G.V. Rao of Greater Alwal Allied Service Association, a federation of residents’ welfare associations in Alwal, said “The civic body collects security deposits for RWH pits, but does ensure their construction.”
