Congress keeps up secular card

Congress has planned a flurry of religious celebrations to promote its secular identity

New Delhi: Finding itself in need of an image makeover, the Congress has planned a flurry of religious celebrations to promote its secular identity in various parts of the country.

On Janmashtami, the Delhi Congress will put up a tableau of Lord Krishna at its Rouse Avenue office, where the “bhajan sandhya” will be followed by the distribution of prasad.

To give the Janmashtami function a true secular colour, the Congress has reportedly asked all its three Muslim MLAs to be present.

One of the Muslim MLAs said all three had agreed to join the Janamashtami festivities. “There is no one in the Congress who can be branded as communal. We are carrying forward the secular culture of our party.” Asked about other religious festivals like Chaath Puja, the leader said: “We have been celebrating this festival with a lot of fanfare. Now we plan to hold a cultural evening to celebrate this major festival.”
