GHMC identifies 52 slums for revamp

Identified slums will be remodled while the rest are for gap filling
Hyderabad: In a recent survey by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, 72 slums were identified under the ‘Slum Free Hyderabad project’, of which 52 have been identified for remodeling and the rest for gap filling. Slums at areas including Uppal, Lalbahadur Nagar, Gosha Mahal, Nampally and Abids etc. have been identified for the housing scheme under the project.
As per the survey, the Central Zone has the most – 33 slums – in its area, with about 10 within Musheerabad. This is followed by the West Zone, which has about 18 slums in areas like Serilingampally, Kukat-pally and Patancheru. The East Zone has five slums, South Zone has nine and North zone has seven slums. “Only four states and union territories across the country have zero slum population, including Manipur, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and Lakshadweep, stated in the National Census of 2011.
Of the 72 slums, more than 26 are on government land, 25 are partly owned by the government and private bodies and five are on encroached land.“It is not possible to make policies without having proper data of the slum population. Every time there is a new policy we have to re-consider the beneficiaries and this is creating confusion,” said a GHMC official.
