Denotification issue for GHMC

Pucca houses cannot be denotified as householders are beneficiaries of many schemes and political pressure
Hyderabad: Experts and socialists recommend demolishing huts along with reconstruction and up-gradation of kuccha houses and relocation of slums that are near harmful industries. Sources at the GHMC say that some slums that have pucca houses cannot be denotified owing to political pressure as most of the householders are beneficiaries of many schemes.
While many slum dwellers complain that before elections, politicians promise several amenities and later forget them, GHMC official say that they cannot denotify a slum as it will make the dwellers ineligible for certain schemes that they have been beneficiaries of.
Mr Rajaiah, a resident of the Mudfort Basthi at Gunrock said, “We were promised a proper school, a small clinic, drinking water and proper electoral rolls. But all we received on time were the voter ID cards to ensure our vote was counted. None of the promises made were delivered. They always disappoint us.”
Whereas a GHMC official said that they faced immense pressure while denotifying a slum. “Local leaders or politicians of that area threaten us. If we denotify them, people cannot avail facilities or schemes like the Rs 2 per kg rice etc. So, they will have two or three-storied buildings elsewhere and yet be living there (in the slums),” he said.
