Andhra Pradesh to train Schedule Caste students

Mr Kishore Babu has ordered for a two-week special drive to set right the functioning of SC hostels

Hyderabad: Scheduled Caste students aspiring to pursue higher education abroad will be given training to crack Toefl, IELTS, GRE and GMAT, an eligibility criteria to study in universities abroad.

Andhra Pradesh social welfare minister R. Kishore Babu told Deccan Chronicle that such training would be given in all 13 districts of the state. The minister also expressed unhappiness over the maintenance of SC hostels during his inspection visit recently.

Mr Kishore Babu has ordered for a two-week special drive to set right the functioning of SC hostels. “During the first week, all the officials will visit and inspect the hostels, identify the gaps and improve the facilities. From second week, I will go and inspect again,” he said.

“I inspected many hostels in most of the districts. I also had food in the hostels along with students. There are irregularities and gaps which need to be set right. The SC hostel sector is on the verge of the collapse due to mismanagement during last decade,” he said.

Of a 1.40 lakh sanctioned strength in 1,490 SC hostels, excluding Gurukul and other hostels, the minister said, 1.20 lakh was filled up leaving 20,000 seats vacant.
He cited competition from English medium schools for the enrolment going down.
