Cyber crime: Thugs prowl wedding sites

Crooks cheat young women by making fake profiles
Hyderabad:Interior designer Deepika (name changed) is still in shock regarding her experience with a fraudster she came in touch with on the Bharat Matrimony website. The 26 year old met the man eight times in two months, apart from their endless number of phone conversations, before he vanished with Rs 35,000 of hers.
The man, who gave his name as Shekhar and claimed to be a project manager in a multinational company, had also sexually exploited her promising that they would get married in six months.
“He convinced me that he was US-educated and was living in the city with a high paying job. After exchanging four emails, we met up with my parent’s permission. He appeared to be sensible and charming. After our third meeting, he told me that our marriage should take place in six months. One morning, he called me and said that he was stuck in a hotel in Mumbai and his credit and debit cards were missing. He requested me to deposit Rs 35,000 in his friend’s bank account so that he could pay the hotel bills and come back to Hyderabad. Though he promised to pay me back as soon as he reached in city, he never repaid. Meanwhile, we also got physically closer,” said Ms Deepika.
Shekhar never replied to her emails and switched off his phone. “In order to find out the truth, I made a fake account on the same website and got in touch with him again. Then I understood that he just wanted to play around and sleep with women,” said Ms Deepika.
Many fraudsters like Shekhar prowl the matrimonial sites with fake profiles and cheat women, luring them with marriage proposals.
They send gifts and meet the families to convince the victims before extracting huge amounts and fleeing.
Some also sexually exploit women after building romantic relationships. The Cyber crime police in Hyderabad and Cyberabad have been receiving frequent complaints regarding matrimony site frauds.
“We get at least three complaints a month about matrimony cheating. In most of the cases, men take money after promising marriage and abscond. In rare cases, girls are also sexually exploited,” said Ms Janaki Sharmila, Cyberabad additional DCP, Crimes.
In another case, a young divorcee was cheated by a man named Anil Kumar Naidu, who claimed to be working in L&T. He contacted the woman’s mother and convinced her that he was also a divorcee and fixed the alliance. He took thousands of rupees from her before calling off the match and absconding.
