Probe into Kudgi firing ends, report by August 19
Belgaum: The magisterial inquiry into the police firing that left several injured in the violence during a farmers’ protest against the proposed Kudgi Super Thermal Power Project (KSTPP) in Kudgi, concluded on Friday and a report is expected to be submitted to the government by August 19.
Two farmers received bullet injuries and a large number of them were hurt in the violence. The farmers with bullet injuries are still being treated at the KLE Hospital, Belgaum.
Bijapur district magistrate, D Randeep who headed the inquiry, interrogated several people, including the police present during the protest, over the last 40 days and recorded the versions of at least 28 eyewitnesses at a meeting held at the Kudgi community hall.
According to sources, he also recorded the statements of eight other people on Friday before concluding his inquiry. The police firing has come under severe criticism by various farmers’ organisations across the state.
Most of the farmers’ organizations, including the Rajya Raita Sangh continue to oppose the establishment of the power plant at Kudgi where work has begun on establishing it. The management of KSTPP announced recently that the first phase of the project was expected to be completed in early 2016.
