No problem in funding, say officials
The project costs are estimated to cross over Rs 4,000 crore
Chennai: According to official sources with the local administration department funding was never a problem for the capital city, but the results are not that encouraging.
Under the Chennai mega city development mission, the government designated Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructural Financial Services as the nodal agency for executing the multi crore Chennai mega city development mission.
The project costs are estimated to cross over Rs 4,000 crore.
And from 2011 to 2013, a sum of over Rs 1,000 crore were sanctioned to strengthen the infrastructure of suburban areas that were merged with the corporation and of this amount Rs 648 crore was disbursed to corporation of Chennai and metro water to improve the stormwater drain and drainage systems, sources admitted.
Former councillor Panneer Selvam meanwhile said stormwater drains in Choolai and Pattalam would have to be cleared of encroachments before the monsoon ended, he added. A corporation official said that he would look into the issue.
