Khap bans jeans, mobile for girls
Panchayat in Uttar Pradesh has banned girls from wearing jeans and keeping mobile
Lucknow:A community panchayat in western Uttar Pradesh has banned girls from wearing jeans and keeping mobile phones, saying that was ‘polluting’ their minds and encouraging eve teasing incidents.
The Gujjar community panchayat in Jadwad village in Muzaffarnagar district on Friday passed this diktat and also warned of punishment if anyone tried to defy their orders. The panchayat members said that recent instances of eve-teasing in the region were a direct result of girls wearing ‘objectionable’ (read jeans) clothes.
The panchayat further asked the community members not to allow disc jockeys during wedding functions since this encourages rowdyism.
Village head Ashok Kumar , who was among those present at the meeting, said that the panchayat had issued diktats after taking stock of recent incidents and changing times. “A little bit of caution will go a long way in preserving moral values in society,” he said.
