Ebola virus alert reaches Chennai
Fever, muscle pain and severe bleeding are some of the symptoms of Ebola
Chennai: In the wake of the Ebola virus outbreak in four West-African nations and WHO declaring the illness as an international emergency, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has shared information about the virus and symptoms to all Metros including Chennai. Sudden onset of fever, muscle pain and severe bleeding are some of the symptoms of Ebola, a fatal virus.
Asked about the steps taken by the state government to identify patients with the virus, a senior official from Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine said that they had informed all district hospitals, deputy directors, government hospitals and public health centres to check for any symptoms of Ebola virus.
“We have been monitoring all types of fevers and as soon as Ebola started in Africa during April, we alerted all hospitals in the state and now we have again communicated the same. There is no need to panic,” the official said, adding that in case of any clarification one could contact 104 health helpline.
A senior health official pointed out that they would collect samples from persons who complain with symptoms and send it to laboratories in Pune and Delhi. “There’s no direct flight from African countries to Chennai. Passengers transit either at Mumbai or Delhi, where they are being monitored. There is no need to panic”, the official said.
“Humans could contact Ebola by close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals. There’s no cure for this virus and people with the virus should be isolated as it’s the high case fatality hemorrhagic virus”, said Dr. Madhu Purushothaman, senior consultant at SIMS, Vadapalani.
