Be ready to face flooded roads in Chennai
More than Rs 3,000 crore of public money spent into the City's stormwater drain network
Chennai: In the past five years, more than Rs 3,000 crore of public money has gone into the Chennai stormwater drain network under the micro and macro drain project aimed to alleviate flooding.
Ironically, another Rs 4,000 crore worth of works have begun to strengthen the city’s stormwater and drainage network. The preliminary results show that the recent evening showers over the past one week left several roads inundated, and if the rain gods are generous this season, Chennaiites had better be prepared to wade through the murky rain water, which comes as a package along with sewerage.
Usually by this time, the corporation should have completed desilting and clearing of stormwater drains, but to the dismay of civic activists more than 40 per cent of desilting and stormwater drain strengthening works in core areas are pending as also in the extended areas of Chennai corporation, Ripon Building sources said. a n P4
