Father kills daughter for ‘honour’

The victim was attacked because she married a boy from another caste
Hyderabad: In a shocking case of ‘honour killing’, a man allegedly murdered his 19-year-old daughter in Ganugubanda village of Nalgonda district on Saturday. The victim was attacked because she married a boy from another caste. The angry father allegedly hacked her to death with an axe after taking her to the outskirts of the village.
Swapna, 19, daughter of B. Lingaiah and Buchamma was in love with Praveen, 24, son of P. Ushaiah and Muthamma of the same village. While Swapna was studying Intermediate second-year in the Government Junior College, Praveen was running an autorickshaw between Ganugabanda and Thungathurthy.
According to the police, it was on her way to college and back home, they both got introduced to each other. They soon became friends, which later developed into love and they decided to get married. As both belonged to different castes, they feared that their elders would not accept their relationship and agree to their marriage.
About a month ago, they got married at Bhadrachalam in Khammam district and returned to the village a week ago. Swapna’s parents who learnt about this got very angry. Out of fear, the couple approached the Thungathurthy police about four days ago and sought protection.
“The parents were called and counselled,” cops said.
According to K. Parthasarathy, Circle Inspector, on Saturday morning, in Praveen’s absence, Swapna’s parents asked her to come to their house. There Lingaiah hacked her to death with an axe.
A case of murder under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code has been registered and investigated. The inspector said adding the accused were absconding. DSP Shravan Kumar termed it as a case of honour killing as the victim had defied her parents to marry outside the caste.
