No metro water in ward 165 for 10 days

The water supply to the neighbourhood was contaminated with sewage water
CHENNAI: Residents of Ward 165 in Nanganallur have been dependent on water tankers for the last 10 days as the metro water connection has been temporarily disconnected. A Metro Water pipe, carrying water to the ward, was damaged when private telephone operators illegally dug up the roads for laying cables.
The water supply to the neighbourhood was contaminated with sewage water following which the connection was plugged and water was sent through lorries.
“We do not get sufficient bore water in this area as the ground water level is too low. Now the Metro Water line is also disturbed which causes more inconvenience,” said a resident. “Earlier, we used to get metro water once in four days, but now we have had to depend on water from tankers,” he added.
Ward councillor R. Naresh Kumar said that the problem was identified in the adjacent Ward 164 and they were remedying the situation.
“Some private telephone operators have damaged the pipe, resulting in sewage water getting mixing with Metro Water’s supply. We are trying to identify the miscreant,” the councillor said. “Even as we reject their application for doing road cuts, some go ahead, unmindful of the pipelines beneath. This pipe will be repaired in a day or two,” Mr. Kumar added.
A metro water official said that the department was in the process of identifying the source of the pollution. “For now, we are providing alternative supply of water,” he said.
