Hindu outfit protests proposal to demolish temple in Tamil Nadu

Police said officials have already issued the notice to vacate the temple premises

Coimbatore: Protesting the proposed demolition of a roadside temple, claimed to be 140 years old, for construction of a flyover, members of an Hindu outfit on Saturday staged a demonstration in front of it in busy Gandhipuram locality.

About 50 volunteers of Hindu Munnani, led by its President, Arjun Sampath squatted in front of Lord Ganesha temple condemning the highways department and the district administration for ordering the demolition of the temple.

Police said officials have already issued the notice and informed the priest and trustees of the temple last night to vacate the premises, in a week's time.

The highways department also arranged an alternative plot for the temple, which is situated in the corner of a junction of busy area, they said.

Sampath said he has sent a fax to the Chief Minister seeking intervention.
