Bennet Abraham shrugs off inquiry panel report against him

Dr Bennet said he could have done a better job than Shashi Tharoor had he been elected

Thiruvananthapuram: Even as CPI state council meet deliberated the defeat in Thiruvananthapuram, the party candidate Bennet Abraham said he was least bothered about the deliberations or the findings of the three member inquiry panel.

“There are reports that lot of funds were collected for election campaign. In fact after the elections I was told by some leaders that Rs 3 lakh was still unspent from the election fund. But I didn’t bother. It was the party which approached me to contest and I never went to them,’’ he said adding that first a section of party people said it was payment seat and later they stated that a lot of money had come because of my candidature. “I am least interested about their conclusions,’’ he added.

Dr Bennet Abraham said that he could have done a better job than Shashi Tharoor had he been elected from here. “There were many within the party who wanted to contest from here. But party chose me. I am not disappointed with whatever happened. I have a profession and I continue to serve the people,’’ he added.

A sizeable section of members who took part in the deliberations at the CPI state council meeting here endorsed the findings of the three member panel which probed the defeat.

The members called for further inquiry into the financial deal that was done at various levels during the time of campaigning. Most such deals were part of the expenses for election campaigning and hence there were serious irregularities in use of funds.

There are allegations that more than Rs 1 crore had been collected by the party through Bennet Abraham’s candidature and there were serious gaps in the utilisation of funds. A section of members demanded immediate removal of CPI district secretary Venjaramoodu Sasi as his continuation in the seat would dent the image of the party further.
