Ban on immersions in Hussainsagar sought

Hussainsagar Lake had served the drinking water needs of Hyderabad and Secunderabad
Hyderabad: An advocate of the city has moved the High Court seeking a ban on immersions in Hussainsagar Lake as it has been causing multiple problems, especially pollution of the lake and reducing the strength of the bund.
Mamidi Venu Madhav told the court that the Hussainsagar Lake had served the drinking water needs of Hyderabad and Secunderabad up to 1965. He said that he had moved a petition in 2013 also but the court had dismissed it along with other petitions in view of the orders passed by a Division Bench in 1998 regarding immersion of idols in the lake by retreating that the orders should be implemented in true spirit.
Meanwhile, the historians and the senior citizens of the city are differing with the claim of the petitioner that Hussainsagar Lake was meant for drinking water purpose and served the drinking water needs of Hyderabad and Secunderabad up to 1965.
A 90-year-old man, Syed Arifullah Hussaini of the city, said that after the construction of Osmansagar during the regime of Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan none of the residents in the city depended on Hussainsagar water.
