Inspector opens fire, injures fleeing rowdy
Bengaluru: A rowdy was shot at and arrested by the police after he attacked a constable, who had gone to arrest him. The incident was reported near Kalpalli cemetery near Halasur on Friday morning. Syed, a constable attached to Bharathinagar police station, was injured in the incident. The rowdy, identified as Praveen (29), sustained injuries and was hospitalised. His associate Kumaresh has also been arrested.
According to the police, the accused duo had kidnapped Srinivas, an LPG cylinder distributor in Bharathinagar, in an auto on Thursday and took him to KGF. He was kept in illegal detention the entire night and the accused demanded Rs 20,000 from him. But Srinivas gave Rs 5,000 that he had with him and told them he would arrange the remaining amount later.
On Friday morning the accused duo decided to take him towards Nagarabavi Junction, as Srinivas had told them that he would get the money from a friend there. However, based on a tip off, a police team intercepted their auto near Kalpalli graveyard. “Constable Syed, who went near the auto and told the accused to surrender, was taken aback when the duo threatened the police that they would kill Srinivas, if they went near them. Praveen even attacked the constable with a machete. As he got down from the auto and tried to escape, inspector K.S. Nagaraj shot him on his right leg using his service revolver. Then the injured constable and Praveen were shifted to a hospital, while Kumaresh was arrested and Srinivas rescued,” the police said.
Praveen, a rowdy-sheeter at Bharathinagar police station, was facing charges of attempt to murder, robbery, extortion and other offences in Bharathinagar, Hennur and Pulikeshinagar police stations.
“Praveen, who was earlier working in a LPG cylinder distribution agency run by Louis, was sacked for allegedly misusing funds. He opened another LPG cylinder distribution agency on the same road, but was not successful. About six months ago, he attacked Louis and was arrested in this regard and he had come out from jail just a week ago. Again he had stabbed Louis on August 6 and Louis was hospitalised,” the police added.
