KRS level at maximum: Excess water released to Tamil Nadu

KRS authorities had announced flood alerts and warned people to protect their properties

Mysore: The water level in the mighty KRS reservoir touched the brim at 124.80 feet on Thursday. With rains continuing in the Cauvery catchment area and the inflow touching 46,058 cusecs, as much as 60,174 cusecs water was released into the river leading to Tamil Nadu from KRS and Kabini reservoirs.

While KRS authorities had announced flood alerts and had warned people in low lying areas to protect their properties and move to safer places, Mandya district police have banned boating, swimming and other water sports in Ghosai Ghat, Triveni Sangam and Ranganthittu in Srirangpatna taluk.

The Kodagu district administration has declared a holiday from Tuesday for schools which will remain closed on Friday too, Kodagu Deccan Chronicle office sources said.

Kodagu recorded 53.46 mm rainfall on Thursday. So far from January, Kodagu has recorded an average 1978.47mm rainfall compared to 2653.54 mm rain during the same period the previous year.

At Harangi, the inflow increased to 11,500 cusecs and the level stood at 2856.81feet as against its capacity of 2859 feet. With heavy rains in Wyanad, the inflow into Kabini was 34,000 cusecs while the water level on Thursday was 2282.15 feet. To maintain the level, 34,000 cusecs was released into the river leading to Tamil Nadu.
