Nerdy glasses make a style statement
Mumbai: The latest issue of a popular fashion magazine with Kiran Rao on the cover has been creating a positive buzz in fashion circles. In a pastel suit and her trademark black spectacles, the lady has literally rocked the geek chic look.
Shruti Haasan and Kajal Agarwal have also been spotted carrying off the nerdy look with élan, echoing a trend set by the likes of Deepika Padukone, Sonakshi Sinha and Sonam Kapoor in Bollywood.
Glasses have gained an all-new hipster status, with thick-framed, nerd specs now figuring on every fashionista’s list of must-haves.
“To carry off the look, one really has to have that kind of personality. Kiran has it. I feel, the black frames work well with dungarees and jumpsuits. I have seen many girls even pull it off with skirt,” says stylist and designer Ekta Nahar. The nerdy look has taken the international and national runways by storm.
Veda Nadendla, a city-based model, who manages to carry off the geeky look with much elegance, says, “I don’t sport this look to create a fashion statement. Glasses are convenient for me as I hate lenses and find that the black rims can be worn with all kinds of outfits. It’s a different matter that now, whenever I wear them and go out, I get noticed. I even wear them with a sari.”
While many might feel that the look is a passing fad, stylist Prajanya Anand says it is one of those fashion trends that took its time to grow on us and has reached its peak now.
“The geek chic look has been in vogue for some time and has reached its peak. One can sport it with an interesting hairdo, say a messy fishtail or a puff with a ponytail. Wear it along with a fuchsia or tangerine lip colour for that dash of colour and a peppy look,”she suggests.
