Education hub at Jawaharnagar in Telangana

Housing units built for poor to be sold to institutes

Hyderabad: In what can be the first step of the Telangana state government towards forming an education hub at Jawaharnagar, along the lines of the “Institutional Area” in New Delhi, the state government is planning to sell over 2,858 Rajiv Swagruha housing units built on 50 acre of land.

The Telangana State Housing Corporation is in talks with some Central government and private educational institutions to sell the housing units in the vast project.

“Since an education hub is proposed at Jawaharnagar, the housing units of Rajiv Swagruha will be given to educational institutes. Birla Institute of Technology and Science-Pilani, which plans to expand its institute, has shown interest. We are in talks with the institute,” said B. Venkatesham, the managing director of Telangana State Housing Department.

The department is also in talks with Central Reserve Police Force that wants to set up an institute along with some housing quarters, said insiders.
“Currently, the Housing department is considering Central government institutions, where the finances will not be an issue,” said an insider of the Telangana Housing department.

The Rajiv Swagruha Project, that was taken up on a 50-acre land, has a constructed area of 10 acre, with 2,858 housing units.

By roping in the department of Higher Education to identify the institutions, and the Indian School of Business, HMDA has already prepared a blue print for the education hub by earmarking about 700 acre of land, which include 500 acre for setting up campuses and 200 acre for supporting facilities like roads, dormitories etc. As per the blue print suggestions, each institution would be given land between five and 25 acre.

Infrastructure facilities like electricity, water, sewer, transport, road connectivity and communication would be planned and provided by the authority.
