Delhi state polls likely in December
New Delhi: The Centre is likely to hold Assembly elections in Delhi in December this year, almost a year after the last polls threw up a hung House.
High-level government sources said that hectic deliberations were on between Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung, the Union home ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office. The Supreme Court also asked the Centre on Tuesday to take a decision on the dissolution of the Delhi Assembly “one way or another” within five weeks, asking why the House was being kept in suspended animation when no party was coming forward to form the government.
The court asked, “One party says it does not want to form the government. The other says it cannot. A third party has no strength. In a situation like this, why should the people suffer.” The SC asked the Centre what steps it had taken in the past five months to explore the chances of government formation.
