Centre awaits Congress response over Insurance Amendment Bill
New Delhi: The BJP-led NDA government on Tuesday awaited a response from the Congress and other Opposition parties over the Insurance Amendment Bill after they had sought time to come out with suggestions, as indications emerged that a meeting between the two sides could take place on Wednesday.
The RSS-backed trade union Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) has, meanwhile, threatened to go on a strike if the Bill was passed. BMS organising secretary K.C. Mishra said the union was opposed to any form of FDI, and if the bill was passed the BMS would go on a nationwide strike.
Sources said that Centre is ready to hold talks with the Opposition as soon as these parties got back to them with suggestions on certain provisions in the Insurance Bill. Finance minister Arun Jaitley held a meeting with Congress leader Anand Sharma in this regard. The tabling of the Bill in the RS hit a roadblock with the Congress and other Opposition parties saying that the Bill should be referred to a select committee.
