Drive against drunks may help Hyderabad police
Crackdown in line with KCR move to make city a ‘safest’ place
Hyderabad: With the city police launching a massive crackdown on drunkards creating nuisance in public, many citizens worry that this might become another tool for corrupt policemen to loot people on the streets.
Many worry that they might fall prey to corrupt officials even if they consume alcohol inside their residences and venture out. Innocents might also be picked up by the cops under the pretext of the crackdown, they fear.
Two days back, Begumpet traffic police had allegedly collected bribes from inebriated commuters, compelling the Anti-Corruption Bureau to intervene. However, senior cops say that there is no need for such worries as the new initiative has been implemented in a systematic way.
In order to carry out Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s vision of a ‘Safe Hyderabad’, the city police started the crackdown on people consuming alcohol in public and has arrested many people in the last few weeks from different parts of the city.
However, from this month onwards, policemen will initiate more stringent measures against drunkards.
Officials say that with the new measures, drunks wandering on the streets, creating problems for women and children, would face jail time. Unlike earlier, the police has decided to book cases against the offenders under IPC section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), which would ensure maximum 30 days of imprisonment with a fine. Earlier the police would only booked cases under the City Police Act that imposed a meagre penalty.
On Tuesday, seven persons were arrested by the Commissioner’s Task Force and sentenced to jail by the Nampally court.
