Disabled man returns freebie
R Sivakumar often developed technical problems with the vehicle given to him
Madurai: A disabled man returned the battery operated motorcycle, a government freebie, to the district administration saying he could not spend any more on the vehicle which often developed technical problems. The officials, however, sent him back along with the motorcycle. Driving the vehicle to the collector’s office in Madurai on Monday, R. Sivakumar, working as a clerk in a private firm, said he had spent Rs30,000, besides spending smaller amounts, for repair ever since he got it free from the state government on April 26, 2012. He said he needed to spend anywhere between Rs1,000 and Rs 3,000 for the motorcycle for every snag.
Sivakumar encounters other problems also because of the vehicle. He said the battery, on being recharged, consumes a lot of electricity due to which he fears he would earn the wrath of his neighbours in the ‘group’ house where he stays. He could also not find expertise to set right the technical hitches. “If I contact the company, they tell me that it would take a month’s time to send a mechanic. They also suggest that I approach a nearby workshop,” he said.
Sivakumar said his income was low and he cannot afford to spend on repairing the vehicle. When he handed over the vehicle to the officials, they refused to accept it. Sivakumar said he wanted the government to take the motorcycle and provide him with a petrol-operated vehicle.
