Survey puts Micromax sales ahead of Samsung

New Delh: There is a new leader in the mobile phones: Micromax. Micromax became the leading mobile phone supplier brand in India in April-June 2014 for the first time ever. It surpassed Samsung by capturing 17 per cent market share in terms of overall handset shipments in April-June period up from 13 per cent in Januaray-March 2014 period, according to market research firm Counter-point Research.
Samsung, which is now number two, had 14.4 per cent market share in the April-June period (Q2). However, the Korean firm is still number one in the smartphone category, which is the high margin segment.
In smartphones, Samsung had a market share of 25.3 per cent in Q2 against number Micromax which had 19 per cent. Micromax also became the leading feature phone supplier overtaking Nokia for the first time. Its market share was 15.2 percent in feature phone category against 14.7 percent of Nokia in Q2. Samsung was at fourth position with a marketshare of 8.5 per cent.
Globally, Micromax also jumped up the rankings becoming the tenth largest handset brand in terms of mobile phone shipment volumes. It has widened the gap with the third largest smartphone player as the race for the third place is up for grabs with competition between Karbonn, Motorola, Celkon, Nokia, Apple and Sony. The third largest mobile phone company in the smartphone category is Karbonn with a marketshare of around 6 percent in Q2.
“The surprise performance was from Motorola thanks to its attractive but leaner portfolio and go-to-market strategy. The brand has built a strong base in the high volume India smartphone market, entering the top five rankings,” said Counterpoint Research.
