Electricity cuts hit private hospitals, upset schedules
Unscheduled power cuts in the city are hitting small hospitals
Hyderabad:Unscheduled power cuts in the city are hitting small hospitals as their back-up generators are unable to supply power during long outages. Many city areas like ECIL, Kukatpally, Bowenpally, Medchal, Alwal are facing power cuts for eight to 10 hours.
Dr S. Ramakrishna of Kukatpally explained, “We have to decide elective surgeries as per the schedule of power cuts.”
Many doctors say the erratic cuts are making deep inroads into their pockets. Dr G. Kishan, a general surgeon at Jubliee Hills explained, “Due to power cuts we were forced to upgrade generators. But this has made us dig deep into our pockets as costs are escalating.”
Dentist Dr R. Srinivas of Alwal said, “I take up surgeries only when there is power. During cuts I schedule counselling. My work pattern has changed due to the cuts.”
While big hospitals like Gandhi, Osmania General Hospital and maternity hospitals have generator back-up, the government area hospitals and public health centers are doing badly. A senior government doctor said, “The clinics on the outskirts are taking a huge beating. The vaccination schedule of new born kids has been hit. Vaccines have to be stored in hospitals where there is power back-up, and doctors have to travel 10 to 15 km to get the vaccines. This takes up a lot of their time.”
