Drunken driving still prevalent in Hyderabad

Blue-collar employees have always topped the list due to their lack of civic sense

Hyderabad: Despite strict rules, counselling and imposing penalties, the number of cases of drunken driving has not come down. Records show that 60 per cent of the offenders charged with drunken driving are private and blue-collar employees.

According to the traffic authorities, while the number of offenders in the other categories have come down a bit, private and blue-collar employees have always topped the list due to their lack of civic sense, awareness and their careless attitude.

“The city needs more awareness and stricter rules. The imprisonment tenure and the amount of penalty can be increased in order to make people understand the gravity of the offence. It is important that they understand that the rules are imp-osed for their safety,” said Mr M. Srinivasulu, reserve inspector of police, TTI.
