25 per cent sand reaches given to Self Help Groups

Women groups will be encouraged in sand mining activities
Hyderabad: In spite of opposition from majority of ministers, AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has taken a bold decision on the allotment of 25 per cent sand reaches to Self Help Groups’ women.
When the CM discussed the proposal, some ministers expressed doubts and said that if sand reaches were allotted to women they may go into the hands of the sand mafia.
At this stage, rural development director V. Karuna narrated her experience which apparently gave confidence to the CM. In the review meeting IAS officer Karuna recalled the time when she worked as joint collector in Warangal.
She said that they encouraged SHGs women in sand mining activities. She said to upload a lorry of sand they spent Rs 6,000 and for transportation to Hyderabad around Rs 2,000. The lorry of sand was sold for around Rs 15,000, so that per lorry of sand SHGs women earned Rs 7,000 and in this way each woman earned Rs 30,000 per month.
