KSRTC ordered to pay Rs 75.78 Lakh
Thiruvananthapuram:The Thiruvananthapuram Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has ordered KSRTC to pay up compensation to the tune of Rs 75.78 lakh to the dependants of a man who was killed by a KSRTC bus.The two-wheeler of K. Madanakumar of Samadhi madom, Nandavam, was mowed down by a KSRTC bus near airport wirelesss station on the International Airport Road, Thiruvananthapuram, on March 16, 2005.
The deceased was 46 years old and was a senior assistant at the Fire Services of Airport Authority of India. He was about to enter his officer premises when he was killed by the rash driving by the driver.The deceased left behind his wife V.K. Syla Madankumaran, an employee of postal department and children Aiswarya and Anoop.
The MACT had originally awarded Rs 41.35 lakh but after considering the 9 per cent interest since 2005, the compensation becomes Rs 75.78 lakh. Of this amount, around Rs 39.6 lakh is solely the earning dependency benefit.
As per the Thiruvananthapuram MACT judge C. Sounderash, this is one of the highest sums awarded for an accident victim, said Vahuthacaud R. Narendran Nair, the counsel of the family. “Generally KSRTC is ordered to pay compensation between '10 lakh and 15 lakh for an accident death. This is something new for us.”
